Lake Biwa is the largest lake in Japan. In October 2020, a stylish inn was opened in Omi Hachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, located on the eastern side of Lake Biwa, in a renovated 190-year-old merchant house.
The renovated building is the former Kita Residence, which used to be a tatami mat shop in the Edo period.
The exterior of the house is surprisingly simple, with blackened baking sheets and bengara-colored lattices.

Ryokan WAKATSU… is an extraordinary modern space.
There are two rooms, a garden, a café, and a restaurant in a renovated warehouse on the premises, and no matter where you look, you are sure to find something stylish.
The weight of history that has watched over the rise and fall of the moat is mixed with a modern sense reminiscent of a gallery to create a unique space.
One of the rooms is the “Ki-no-ma,” which overlooks the Hachimanbori moat.
The room is about 96 square meters in size and is a Japanese-style room rented out as a single building, with check-in available from 1:00 pm.
The bath is a tub bath made of cedar wood, a rarity nowadays.
The refreshing scent of the wood, as if you were in a forest, is also a treat.

The building of the Japanese restaurant “Tameru” where we had dinner was a warehouse from the late Edo period. It is a small restaurant with only six seats at a long wooden counter covered with Japanese paper and one private room, but the low ceiling is partially vaulted and the pillars and beams are exposed.
The atmosphere exuded by the passage of time and the new sensibility are exquisitely blended together.
The first thing you should taste here is Omi beef grilled over charcoal or roasted over a straw fire from Wakayama.
There are also many local ingredients such as Hokuriku seafood, reminiscent of the former “Saba Kaido” (mackerel road), which can be enjoyed in kaiseki style.
