About 5 minutes by car from Akayu Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line.
“Yamagataza Takinami” is located in the area where Akayu Hot Spring, which boasts a history and tradition of 925 years since its opening, springs out of the ground.
This long-established ryokan, which has been in business for more than 100 years, was entirely renovated in 2017.
It was beautifully reborn in a modern style to meet today’s needs, while keeping the good old things intact.
Passing through the thatched gate associated with Date Masamune, you will see the 350-year-old main building, which is a relocated house of a grand village headman from the Uesugi domain era.
From the top of the mansion, a fire-fighting mask made in the Edo period watches over the house.

The charm of Yamagataza Takinami is that you can feel Yamagata with your whole body.
This is precisely the concept behind the “Ikikaeri Project,” a whole-building renovation project.
There are 19 guest rooms.
There are three types of rooms: “KURA,” a renovated warehouse, “SAKURA” and “YAMAGATA,” a relocated wooden school building, all with open-air baths.
As the name suggests, “YAMAGATA” features furniture made in Yamagata and works by artists active in Yamagata, allowing guests to experience the culture of Yamagata.
For example, “YAMAGATA 02” features the “Centro” designed by Isamu Kenmochi, which was unveiled in 1985. In “YAMAGATA 05” is a low chair designed by Daisaku Cho.
Both are masterpieces of Yamagata’s Tendo Mokuko, and provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the wonderful local product design.
